การจัดการของเสียให้เป็นศูนย์ (Zero Waste Management) สอดคล้องกับการดำเนินงานโครงการมหาวิทยาลัยสีเขียว (Green University) ในด้านการจัดการของเสียที่เกิดขึ้น โดยมหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีราชมงคลอีสานวิทยาเขตสุรินทร์ มีของเสียที่เกิดจากชีวมวล (Biomass) เช่น กิ่งไม้ ใบไม้ จากต้นไม้ในพื้นที่สีเขียว และของเสียจากภาคการเกษตรที่เกี่ยวข้องกับชีวมวลเป็นจำนวนมากในแต่ละปี ซึ่งชีวมวลเป็นแหล่งเชื้อเพลิงที่มีการใช้กันมานานแล้ว เช่น การนำเศษกิ่งไม้แห้งมาก่อเป็นกองแล้วจุดไฟเพื่อให้ความร้อนและแสงสว่างของมนุษย์ซึ่งเศษกิ่งไม้แห้งนี้ถือเป็นเชื้อเพลิงชีวมวลชนิดหนึ่งชีวมวลนั้นยังนับเป็นพลังงานหมุนเวียนชนิดหนึ่งด้วยเนื่องจากเชื้อเพลิงชีวมวลเป็นแหล่งพลังงานที่สามารถหาได้และเกิดทดแทนขึ้นในธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อมเป็นวัฏจักรไปเรื่อย ๆ โครงการจึงวิจัยศึกษาเศษถ่านไม้รวมที่เป็นของเสียในพื้นที่มหาวิทยาลัย มาวิจัยและพัฒนานำกลับมาผลิตให้เป็นถ่านอัดแท่งสำหรับการนำไปใช้เป็นพลังงานทางเลือก (Waste to Alternative Energy) ซึ่งสอดคล้องกับการจัดการของเสีย ลดของเสียให้เป็นศูนย์ ในการดำเนินงานโครงการมหาวิทยาลัยสีเขียวต่อไป
